Chapter 15

Marly leaned her head against the window pane in her bedroom. The cold outdoors bore through the window pane and chilled her as she gazed into the gathering dusk. Her stomach tied itself in knots and sent doubts to her heart. The afternoon at the festival had been so much fun, and when Bryce had invited her to attend a concert with him and their friends, Karen and Stan Davis, and Allen and Carol, she had said yes without hesitation.

Now she wrestled with that decision. Going with him, even with old friends, could lead her in a direction she wasn’t ready to take. With a sigh, she plopped onto the bed. Her head had forgiven him for what happened all those years ago, but her heart still harbored the pain and resentment of rejection.

She padded over to the closet and surveyed the clothes there, shoving hangers back and forth to find a top to go with her slacks. Why had she agreed to go tonight? She closed her eyes and bit her lip.

“Lord, please help me get through this. I have to let the bitterness go. I can’t keep those old feelings of my love buried down deep now when they’re fighting so hard to come to the surface.” She wiped moist hands down her pants legs then reached for a cream mock turtleneck sweater to go with her red corduroy pants..

Carol knocked on the doorframe. “Hey, you’re not ready. Come on, or we’ll be late.”

“I’m sorry, but I couldn’t decide what to wear. All I need to do is put my sweater on.”

“That one looks great. They’ll be here in a minute.”

Okay, I’ll hurry.” Her hands trembled as she slipped the sweater over her head.

“You’re really nervous about this, aren’t you?” Carol sat on the bed. “It’s going to be a great night. You have Allen, Karen, and Stan and me to keep things rolling. Just sit back and enjoy.”

“I hope I can, and I’m so glad we’re going together. I did have fun with Bryce at the festival, but Carter was with us. This is more like a real date.”

“Yeah, more like a group date. Remember those?”

A tickle began in Marly’s throat and she giggled at the memory. “The movies or the skating rink. We did have fun.” She stepped back and lifted her hair. “Up or down?”

“Down. We don’t have time for up.” The doorbell chimed. “And not a moment too soon.”

Marly hugged her friend. “Thanks for helping me feel better. I’m beginning to look forward to the concert.”

She locked arms with Carol Sue, and they headed downstairs.

A few minutes later Marly climbed up into the Davis’ minivan and scooted across the middle seat. Bryce followed and settled beside her. She silently thanked Carol and Allen for taking the back.

Stan Davis backed the vehicle into the street. “Okay, we’re ready to roll. No shop talk, and that includes football, Coach.”

Bryce groaned. “How will I get through an evening without a word about my great team?”

Karen leaned around the front seat and gazed back at Allen.
